Ceramic artist Stephanie Sanders is originally from the Chicago area but has also lived in Savannah, Georgia and Whitefish, Montana to complete school and a ceramics apprenticeship. Much of Sanders’ functional work involves delicate filigree carving to give the appearance of lace. While many pieces can look similar, each is completely unique, especially because of the glazes.
Sanders chooses combinations of glazes that run together to create new drip patterns or colors. While the same glazes can be applied to two different mugs, they will never be exactly alike. Sanders fabricates each piece out of clay with great precision and detail yet leaves the very last step of the process, glazing, somewhat up to chance. She does this intentionally as she enjoys the contrast between total control and unpredictability.
